Synopsis

Steel is a metal alloy of iron (Fe) and carbon (C) with a generally low carbon content (Nasution, 2011). So steel is different from other metals such as iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and titanium (Ti) which are pure metals. Iron is a more dominant element than carbon in the compound. The carbon content ranges from 0.2 - 2.1% of the weight of the steel, depending on the grade. In simple terms, the function of carbon is to improve the quality of steel, namely its tensile strength and hardness. In addition to carbon, steel also often contains elements of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), vanadium (V), molybdenum (Mo) to obtain other properties according to its use in the field such as anti-corrosion, heat resistance, and high temperature resistance. Around 1500 BC In 1100 BC iron was discovered and in that year the iron smelting process began to be widely known. However, previously iron was first used by the Hittites (West Asia) who kept the making secret for 400 years. The smelting and use of iron in life has also been studied by the Greeks, Egyptians, Jews, Romans, Carhaginians and Assyrians in 1000 BC. In 800 BC, India succeeded in making iron after being invaded by the Aryans. The Chinese began to learn to make iron in 700 - 600 BC. However, in Europe in 400 - 500 BC, steel had begun to be used. In 250 BC, the Indians had discovered how to make steel. Steel with a mixture of other elements was first discovered in 1000 AD in the Fatimid empire called Damascus steel. In 1300 AD, the secret of making Damascus steel was lost. Steel began to be studied again for its use and manufacture in Europe in 1700 AD (Nasution, 2011).
