Synopsis

The textbook *Drainage Planning and Systems* presents the stages of drainage planning in a comprehensive, systematic, and practical manner to support the education of civil engineering students, particularly those in the Applied Bachelor’s Program for Road and Bridge Engineering. The discussion begins with the function of drainage in maintaining the performance of roads and surrounding areas, as well as concepts regarding the hydrological cycle and watersheds. It then proceeds to rainfall data processing, frequency analysis, rainfall intensity determination, and the calculation of design flood discharge.
The hydraulics section guides readers in understanding flow characteristics in open and closed channels, the application of Manning’s equation, and the selection of channel shapes and dimensions. These calculations are then translated into technical designs comprising plan views, longitudinal profiles, cross-sections, and details of ancillary structures. The book also covers work volume calculations, unit price analysis, the preparation of cost estimates, and simple implementation schedules.
A key strength of this book is the integration of theory and practice. Each chapter includes calculation examples, summaries, practice problems, and answer keys. Appendices provide hydrological statistical tables, a collection of exam questions, a comprehensive planning case study, an additional question bank, and a semester lesson plan. Environmentally conscious drainage material addresses retention ponds, infiltration wells, biopores, rainwater harvesting, porous pavement, and the Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) approach.
This book is intended for students, lecturers, junior planners, and practitioners seeking a guide to linking hydrological analysis, hydraulic design, Detailed Engineering Design (DED) documentation, and cost estimation within a cohesive drainage planning workflow that is easy to follow and tailored to the context of Indonesian infrastructure.
